Parents at lunch

It's been a great first week!  I have to admit, it was hard to get up this morning.  The excitement of the first day has worn off, and now my body is starting to protest this new early schedule!

In class, we have been learning our new procedures and expectations.  Part of our procedures are our new lunch procedures.  Since we have been going out to recess first and getting out all our wiggles, we have been learning to eat calmly and chat with our team mates, and also learning what we do when we finish lunch.

With our new lunch routine, comes a plea from me for Parents at Lunch.  The responsibilities of Parent at Lunch are to be in the room with the kids while they eat and to model good manners and nice conversation during mealtime and to be outside with the kids during the first 15 minutes of lunch to monitor recess.  Being a parent at lunch will give you an opportunity to share in your child's day, eat lunch with them, and it will also help give me a little break during the day!  I am in need of a Parent at Lunch Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:10-12:00.  If you are able to help, and would like to come eat lunch with your child, please e-mail me at amandag (at) blcbls (dot) org

King of the Castle

We are learning how to treat our classmates kindly and with respect and also learning how to work together to solve problems.  Today we played a game called "King of the Castle".  We needed to work with our teammates to build the highest structure we could out of 10 pieces of paper and one yard of tape.  The children had a blast.  It was so fun to watch them develop the skills of working together.

Sincerely,
Amanda Gustafson

Class rules

Parents:
You should  be so proud of your children!  I was BEAMING as they articulated their goals for what kind of classroom they would like to be in this year, and the rules they need in order to make that goal a reality.  They then worked together with their teammates to write and decorate the classroom rules we came up with.  I can't say it was perfect sailing at first, but we are learning to work respectfully and kindly with our classmates in order to create the best possible classroom for our learning.

e-mail, first day of school, ice cream social

Dear Parents,

It was wonderful meeting you all this past week.  I look forward to getting to know you better throughout this school year and working with all of your amazing children!

The first day of school is tomorrow!  Have your child here between 8:15 and 8:30am.  If you are able to make it, the first chapel of the school year will be at 8:40am.  Parents are always welcome.  After chapel, I would like to ask you to make quick goodbyes so we can get down to the business of learning how to be third graders!  It will also be an early release day tomorrow.  Pick-up will be at 11:15am.  Please be patient with me as I learn who goes with whom and which cars you all drive.

Also tomorrow from 6:30-7:30pm, we will have an ice cream social at the school.  There will also be a time to tour the classroom if you don’t get a chance to drop your child off tomorrow morning.

Finally, my BLS e-mail is up and running!

See you all tomorrow bright and early.  I feel so blessed to be working with all of your children this school year.  Please subscribe to the classroom blog if you haven’t done so already!

Field trips

  Dear Parents:

School hasn't even started, but I've already been hard at work planning our WHOLE YEAR!  As I know many of you work, I wanted to give you our field trip dates early enough to allow PLENTY of planning time for those of you who would like to attend our field trips, but will need to arrange your work schedule in advance.

12/5/13  Our first field trip of the year.  We will be traveling to the Academy of Children's Theater in Richland to attend the play "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever"  we will leave school at 11:15am, and return approximately 2:45pm

2/27/14  Again, we will be going to the Academy of Children's Theater to see, "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing."  We will leave school at 8:30am and return around 11:15am

3/27/14  We will be going to the CBC planetarium to learn about the skies above the Tri-Cities.  We will leave school around 9:15am and return around 12:00pm.

More complete details and sign-ups for parent chaperones will come home at a later date, I just wanted to give plenty of heads-up for those of you who would like to go with us!

All Star Night

You are all cordially invited to attend All Star Night at Bethlehem Lutheran Monday, August 12 at 6:00pm.  This will be our first opportunity to meet each other, for you to sign up for your home visit, drop off classroom supplies, and pick up classroom and student information packets.  Afterwards, you are invited to stay for hot dogs, chips, and dessert.  Bring lawn chairs for you and your family.  If you are unable to make it, please contact Michelle in the office so we can send the information packets to you and let you know the time of your home visit.

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you next Monday!  The classroom is looking fabulous (if I do say so myself) so the kids will be able to peek in and calm their end-of-summer jitters.

Until then,

-Mrs. Gustafson
